Feeding

A good quality seed mixture

Egg food and multi vitamin powder

Their basic diet should consist of ¼ small sunflower seeds to ¾ budgie mixture comprising of various millets, canary seed and panicum - a greater sunflower content is likely to lead to overweight birds.

This should be supplemented daily with a mixture of either sweet apple, carrots, celery, peas, corn on the cob, orange, grapes, blackberries, rose hips, tomatoes and almost any other fruit and vegetable available.

However, they MUST NOT be offered avocado, which is poisonous to them.

Cuttlefish bone and clean water should always be available and a multi-vitamin should also be provided either as water-soluble or in powder form sprinkled onto the fruit/vegetables. Some birds will take grit but mine generally ignore it.

If breeding from Indian Ringneck Parakeets then a good quality egg food should be provided just before and during the breeding cycle and also during the moult to provide additional protein in their diet. This along with lots of fruit and vegetables will be eaten voraciously during the breeding season, so be prepared to keep topping up the dishes but don't allow uneaten food to become spoiled as bacteria will quickly grow and will be hazardous to the birds.
